Flip Flops and Sandals

It’s hard to beat the South Carolina summer heat with temperatures averaging well above 80° Fahrenheit daily. While the summer heat is most commonly accompanied by concerns of adequate sunblock application or strategizing how to get from your car to the office without getting sweat stains on your work attire, protecting our feet are often overlooked.
Most of us don’t leave the house without some type of footwear but it’s easy to forget that as the air temperature rises so does the temperature of the concrete and asphalt. During the South Strands hot 80°+ days, concrete temperatures can rise well above 125°, making protecting our feet from the sun’s harmful UV rays just as important as the rest of our body.
For locals with indoor nine to five jobs this usually isn’t a major concern during business hours, but what about after work or on the weekends? Surely socks in the summer can’t be comfortable if you’re spending a leisurely day outside in the sun. And, who wants to wear loafers to the beach? So, we’re then left with the question, do I wear flip flops or sandals?
Really, this all comes down to personal preference and what activity you’re planning. Sandals are usually more secure than flip flops for active outdoor summer activities. Therefore, kayaking in the inlet may make more sense to wear some type of sandal, if the soles of your feet are protected and the shoe is waterproof. However, flip flops make perfect beachwear. They’re easy to slide on and off and easy to clean when covered in sand.
